Fat Controller at the controls

May 29, 2010

An early post today as I have a full day ahead of me.  The much vaunted Career & Lifestyle  exhibition in Valbonne commences.  It will open at 10am today  all day at Les pre Des Arts and from 10am-3pm on Sunday as well. It will be a glittering affair, well, I shall be there…so to fortify myself ahead of a full days “work” (something that  swore I would never do again) I adjourn to the Queens Legs in Valbonne for my Guinness replenishment course.  Somehow sitting in a pub in summer in the south of France does not seem right, but then the Guinness withdrawal symptoms set in and before one is aware of where one is, auto pilot has guided one to the nearest hostelrie, namely the Queens Legs.

I meet there an old friend with a ridiculous name Ieuan Dady.  What sort of name is that? Welsh I suspect, and although he is a kind and warm human being, and claims a 14 handicap, (we shall see) that Welshness always bubbles to the fore. For several years I have counselled him about changing it to something more civilised but he seems oddly proud of his unpronounceable monika, and I suspect that he and Steve Weston (of sheep fetish notoriety see earlier blogs) may have something in common. Continuing the theme of old friends, I have been sent this very old photograph of myself and Jeff Potter (aka Jet Spotter) from around 1975, ahh good old days..

I am on the left, Jet Spotter is the gay looking Freddie Mercury lookalike on the right

My friend Mark Gurdon tells me he has spent a day as an engine driver on a steam train in the UK and promises to send me a picture, so far it has not materialised, as I believe he had forgotten that said picture will almost certainly feature in this blog, with a well-aimed comment.  The fat controller as he was always been affectionately known, had a splendid day driving the train straight along the rails without once falling off.  Talking of friends back in the UK, I hear a scurrilous rumour that when Paul North was asked what an electron was, he confidently replied that it was something where everyone voted for the next government, so roll on the next General Electron I say.

I hear from my good friend Marc Wolff whose house we will look after in August. I tell him he has been avoiding playing golf with me and I have not seen him at church (Cafe Latin on a Friday), for several weeks but he gives a what he considered to be a good excuse, he has been in Tuscany flying a helicopter for a new film called The Tourist with Angelena Joli and Johnny Depp, a flimsy excuse indeed, clearly not as important as golf.

The Ryhthm Kings – the band based around Bill Wyman of The Rolling Stones are booked to play an outdoor show at St Paul de Vence on June 5th.  Bill is staging his “Stone Alone” exhibition of photographs of the area on 6th in St Paul.  I secure some tickets as I need top get into rock n roll practice ahead of the AC/DC show in Nice later in the month.

So its off to “work” for me, with the  heart warming prospect of how many people I shall save money for today, when they sign up for Currencies Direct, the fortification will come in the shape of a private soiree with fr2day when the  exhibition closed for the day.
